Because it is not allowed by law to operate a business without implementing an occupational health and safety programme, it can be assumed that you have already orientated your employees with your firm's OHS procedures. Maybe you even included an OHS course during a new hire's orientation day. Or you have gathered all of your personnel to undergo intensive safety talks. Despite these efforts, however, you cannot assure that every single person working for you has kept everything by heart.
Since there is a great tendency for people to forget what precautionary measures were taught to them, you need to make safety talks a regular event in your organisation. You can conduct discussions, tackling some of the basic OHS processes and use these as refreshers for everyone. You can also discuss about the meanings of different safety signs to answer the confusion of employees when it comes to symbols and text in the signage. Of course, it is important for you to keep the safety talks short, simple, and engaging. Eliminate the complex tips and focus on the matters that are applicable in your premises. Inject some humour as you discuss the toolbox topics so as not to lose the attention of the participants. If you are able to maintain their focus on your discussion, this means that they are actually listening to you and remembering the advice and reminders you are sharing with them.
Make safety talks a regular habit in your organisation and be a few steps closer to achieving an environment that is free from hazards and accidents.
