Substances and articles that are potentially hazardous to people and
property are known internationally as dangerous goods. Special care
needed when transporting, handling and storing dangerous goods
prevent accidents and injury. All packages and containers, shipping
containers, unit loads, tankers, etc. must hold the correct class label
then transporting and handling dangerous goods. Buildings and
storage areas containing dangerous goods must display appropriate
labels, including HAZCHEM warning notices at all major vehicle
try accesses. The label (or diamond sign) identifies the hazard symbol, and the ciass of the goods by number.
CLASSIFICATIONS
Australia uses a system of classification based on a United Nations

Street Name Signs
SIGN FUNCTION & PLACEMENT
Street name signs (G5 series) are located at intersections providing easy
recognition of street names during day and night time conditions for all
road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. The number and
placement of street name signs depends on the configuration of the road
and the intersection. They should be located as near as practicable to an
intersection where they are easily visible and conspicuous.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
Street name signs are available on a range of extrusions in 150mm and
200mm depths. The minimum sign depth should be 150mm where only
the street name is displayed, or 200mm if an additional line of information
is required (ie property numbers, local govemment area name.) The sign
length should not exceed 1200mm when end-supported on a single post,
or 1800mm when centre-supported on a single post.
The recommended colour combination for street name signs is black
legend on a white background. Other colour combinations have been
adopted but care must be taken to ensure the legend contrasts with the
background colour in order to remain legible.
For viewing during day and night time conditions, street name signs
should be made using retroreflective materials. Street name signs are
generally installed above the optimum height for illumination by vehicle
headlights, therefore, it is recommended that a Class 1 retroreflective
material be used. Depending on the colour combination used, the lighter
of the two colours should be reflectorised.
Additional information can be added to street name signs including
property numbers, local government area names, or local govemment
logos. To ensure the street name remains easily discernible from other
information on the sign, property numbers and local government area
names are displayed in a smaller size legend. Full colour logos provide
easy local government area recognition and branding, and are displayed
at the support end of the sign.
Supplementary plates may be installed below the street name sign and
include property numbers, indication and direction of a remote street (ie "TO STANDARD ST'J, or "NO THROUGH ROAD."
